Shooting in Low-Light Conditions

Question 1

Written assignment (4 hrs)Describe the steps that you will take to ensure that you take a high quality photograph in low light conditions. Refer to exposure, lenses, tripods, colour temperature, flash and ISO. Your answer should be a minimum of 350 words.

To capture a high-quality photograph in low light conditions I would say that a tripod is very important. But in those cases if you dont have a tripod other solutions can be used to stabilize your camera. Find something that you can place your camera on.

When photographing low light pictures you need to have a long exposure to make the object of your photograph clear. and to capture as much light as possible in the picture. When doing these settings, any movement on the photographer’s end would influence the quality of your picture. This is why having a tripod or place the camera at a steady place is very important to avoid any unsteady hands or movement that would make the image blurry.

It’s very important to adjust the ISO on your camera, because it will determine how sensitive your camera’s image sensor is to light. If you set it to a higher ISO, the images will appear sharper and it will allow more light to come in.

The light from a flash more often than not, result in harsh and cold light, and cast hard shadows. If this is what you’re looking for and you want that look in your images, that is fine, but longer exposure of lower aperture is often more suitable than those harsh shadows. If you have a flash that you can connect to the camera via a cable this is a better solution. This because then you can yourself decide from wich angle the light from the flash should hit the object in the image. Other light sources can also be used, such as mobile phones, ipads, etc that can illuminate the object in the image.

By shooting in RAW, it will create higher quality, sharper images than shooting in JPEG format. I prefer shooting in RAW, because it makes the editing process so much easier and flexible when editing in Lightroom or Photoshop.

If you want to produce better low light images, you will need a faster lens. A fast lens has a wide aperture and is great for low light photography because it allows the camera to take in more light. A wider aperture also allows for a faster shutter speed, resulting in little to no camera shake and better quality images.

So when I was doing these photgraphies I first set my settings for the object in the picture and saced those settings. Then when shooting the pictures I used my tripod to have my camera steady. I set my camera to take a picture when touching the screen carefully. I think this gave my camera as less shaking as possible.

Explored a bit with iso, but in general I use quite low Iso to have as less grains in my picture as possible. When taking my photgraphs I found out that I would have to use a lot more time that what I have expected. This is because taking photographs and to set my camera is someting that I dont have a lot off experience with, and have to take a picture, look at it and try new settings to see how that affect my picture. Learning by doing.

  • Take four low-light photographs.
    – One should be a sharp photograph that focuses on a static object, like a building or statue.

-The second photograph should showcase moving objects, like cars or running water.

– For the third photograph, take a moody portrait of a friend and use high ISO settings to your advantage.

– The fourth photograph should explore using external light sources, like a Speedlite flash (please note, if you don’t have the equipment to take this last photograph, you may leave it out).
