Learning Activity – Studio Lighting

  • Name three lighting sources and their functions.
  • Key Light: This is the main light which light up the subject, and creates shaddows and highligts in the shot.
  • Fill light: This is used togehter with the key light and its main pupose is to fill out the shaddoes and higlights made from the key light.
  • Separation light /back light: thie is used to to create a outline between the subject and the background.
  • Name two light modifiers and explain the difference between them.

Reflectors and soft box are two light modifires. The difference between the is that reflectors cast the directional light towards a subject and the softbox is used to soften the light that is spred towards the subject.

  • Draw a diagram of and describe the three-point lighting setup.

  • Draw three studio setups for the following subject matters and list all the equipment that you would use to light your subjects:-Portrait-Fashion-Beauty
Equipment used:
Key light at the right side
Fill light at the left side
Separation light at the back
Equipment used:
Key light at the front right side
Fill light at the left side
Reflector with a foam coard at the right side.
Equipment used:
Key light at the front right side, with a soft box
Fill light at the left side.

  • In a magazine or on the Internet, find one fashion shot, a beauty shot and a portrait shot and explain how you think the lighting was set up in each shot.
Fashion shot.
In this picture the key light is been placed almost above the head of the model at the left side. As you can see the model has a shaddow under her cheak and her right arm.
Beauty shot.
In this picture the key light is placed up to left beside the model. This cast shaddows at the models right side and under her cheak.
and a backlight to light up the background.
Portrait shot.
Here there the key light are at the left side, but with a softbox to soften the light. A fill light at the right side.

Take some portrait shots and pay specific attention to the lighting you use. I would like to see a shot with soft lighting and one with more dramatic, harder lighting. It would be beneficial to hire studio lighting, but if you can’t, you may use natural light, reflectors and your camera’s flash.

As I did not have acess to rent studio lightning I used the light that I had at home. I used a white blanket as a background, and a headlight as key light and two led lights as fill light.

In this first picture I set the key light in front of he model and placed the fill light at each side. This gave a flat and warm feeling in the shot.
In this second picture we were suppose to make a shot with a harder and more dramatic feeling. Here I placed the key light at the left side of the model to make shaddows in her face. I also placed the fill light at the left side to soften the shaddows.

In the last picture the light settings are the same, but by getting the modell to turn her head towards the left and more into the light, the shaddows is at the right side of her face. I think this makes the shot very nice, warm but a bit more dramatic.
