The second learning activity this week was to research the history of Mc Donald’s and use the scamper method to describe their way to success.

The food chain company Mc Donald started in 1940. Operated as a restaurant by the Mc Donald’s brothers Richard and Maurice.  They opened restaurants and ran their chain like a hamburger stand. However, not like we recognize Mc Donald’s today.

Substitute Something:

After a few years, the Mc Donalds brothers shut down their restaurant for a few months. They reopened as a self-service drive-in restaurant. With a smaller menu, with only 9 items. It was hamburger, cheeseburger, soft-drinks, milk, coffee, potato chips and slice of pie. Their menu was cheap so everyone could visit them. They later on replaced potato chips with French fries and a triple tick milkshake came on their menu.

Combine it with something else:

The Mc Donald`s brothers was interested in making a business a nationwide franchasing. Therefore the businessman Ray Kroc came along with the team and opened his own Mc Donalds restaurant.

They wanted attention early on. With red and white tiled buildings and the golden arches, they was easily recognized.

They opened Mc Donalds houses, specially adjusted to interest families with kids. Those houses included playground and happy meals.

Adapt something to it:

Nearby different communities, they opened restaurants so everyone could see them. They introduced the fish filet burger on their menu to include the Roman catholic community.

The Mc Donalds logo, the yellow arches has been changed several times during the years. Until the latest logo, M Im loving it. That logo came with the most successful marketing campaigns in the Mac Donalds history.

 

Modify or Magnify it:

All the time they tried to extend and open restaurant all over the world. They extended their menu and got popular with the, Big Mac menu, Quarter pounder menu, Egg muffin and Mc Nuggets.

They also made a healthier option at their menu, with salads, fruit and smaller portions.

They opened drive-in restaurant so they could be more effective and could make it easier for the passing costumers.

They also some places had drive-home service, which could bring your meal home to your own house.

Put it to some other use:

They have coffee and ice cream you can enjoy as a dessert. They also launched their Mac Donalds all day breakfast.

 

Eliminate something:

They have eliminated the waiters and gotten a self-service system. So it makes the ordering easier and faster.

 

Reverse or rearrange it:

The burgers at Mac Donalds are premade. They are wrapped in paper and laying on a heated shelf. This is good service for the customers, to shorten their waiting time .
